Perhaps it's something convoluted like the average of movie length by number, then the average of those averages. The real graph would look a lot noisier than that. In the 2000s alone the Lord of the Rings movies and then Transformers, Twilight and even the Harry Potter and Star Wars films were long as hell. It's mostly the two hour action flicks and those that go beyond that (like every Michael Bay Movie, even alright ones like Bad Boys 2) that i find too long and either stuck with stretched out middle parts or action sequences that drag on or feel unneccesary in the first place (speaking of Michael Bay, Transformers 2 was the worst offender ever regarding boring unneccesary action scenes) (Looking it up, i'm really impressed that Predator keeps itself at 100 minutes. Speaking of which, i may have to make a slight change in my statement above, i think roundabout 100 minutes length in an action movie is perfectly fine. The Raid 2 would be another movie whose excessive length is earned, as opposed to the first film which already feels long dispite being at a brisk 100ish minutes.
I'd give Mad Max Fury Road a pass (technically an exception as a sci-fi movie, but i just personally view it as a pure action flick) because it managed to both keep it's momentum going and delivered a multitude of action scenes with enough variety to not get boring. i'd generally would give many Superhero Movies a pass because they usually have a lot to establish (that said, that can be a problem in of itself), as do Action Movies that transition to other genres or are set in fantasy/sci-fi universes. I mean even a bloody minute scene of Superman talking to someone as he saves them would add so much for the character. Any movie getting massively cut like that would be affected. But just think about it, the intended movie had nearly 30 minutes extra footage. I know it's looking back in hindsight with Batman v Superman, because what was cut could be boring.
I was hoping with TDKR at 2h45 we'd see that becoming more common especially with these ensemble movies, but that's not the case. More and more people nowadays love the idea of being immersed in these worlds. With the superhero genre in particularly people pay for the quality, not the time. Instead they risked quality for the sake of finances and it was a risk that probably backfired. Just wish studios didn't force a movie to be shorter if it can massively risk the quality of the movie.įor example a 3 hour Batman v Superman may have been better because those 25 extra minutes could massively help the movie. I just want longer movies because particularly with these superhero movies, I want to escape to their world as much as I can.
